Revitalising data capabilities training across a university

As part of UTS’s 2023–34 Digital Literacy and Engagement initiative, CES was engaged to design and develop online learning modules to strengthen data literacy and governance practices across the university. The goal was to ensure that all UTS staff understand their responsibilities in managing data securely and effectively, in alignment with the university’s Data Capability Framework.

Project objectives

  • Develop engaging, interactive online modules to replace existing compliance training.

  • Create a dedicated onboarding module for Data Stewards and Information System Stewards.

  • Align all content with UTS’s Data Strategy vision: “Collaboratively advancing a whole institution approach to leverage reliable and timely data to drive proactive insights and evidence-based decisions.”

Here is an example of an embedded Genial.ly interactive learning object created for the modules.

Our approach

CES conducted a comprehensive audit of existing UTS learning materials, including resources from the Data Hub, Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Records and Archives sites. These materials were mapped against the Data Capabilities Framework to identify learning gaps and opportunities for improvement.

Working closely with UTS subject matter experts and project managers, CES designed two new online modules using the How.Too platform:

  • Data Awareness Module – a 10–15 minute interactive learning experience introducing all staff to data security principles and compliance requirements.

  • Data Steward Onboarding Module – a 10-minute module tailored for new Data and Information System Stewards, outlining their roles, responsibilities, and best practices in data governance.

Modules were designed in accordance with the UTS Style Guide and Learning Design Guide, incorporating interactive elements, quizzes, and graphics to enhance engagement. Final modules were exported in SCORM format for integration into UTS’s NEO training system.

Outcome

The new modules provide a consistent, accessible, and engaging learning experience for all UTS staff. They support the university’s goal of embedding strong data governance practices and improving data literacy across all roles.
